Cobra in Sports village of Commonwealth Games

THE troubled Commonwealth Games were hit by more calamity yesterday as two SNAKES sent the shivers up athletes. They fled the scene faster than Olympics running legend Lord Seb Coe after a deadly 3½ft cobra was spotted slithering down a drain in the tennis stadium. And another snake was found by a shocked South African competitor in his ROOM. Monsoon rains are believed to have driven the serpents into the New Delhi athletes' village and stadium. South Africa's High Commissioner Harris Mbulelo said: "We have very grave concerns. If snakes are found, we can't ask our teams to stay there. It is really a threat to the lives of all our athletes." In a further blow, Indian boxer Akhil Kumar, 29, told how he narrowly escaped injury when his bed in the village collapsed as he sat on it. The disasters are the latest problem for organisers battling to spruce up facilities for Sunday's opening ceremony.
